Clear, actionable goals will always relate to at least one of those three things. It is important that you always determine your desired result and then work with those you influence to align everyone’s behaviors with it. It must be clear to everyone involved what the desired result is. Once you have done that, it is not particularly difficult to identify the behaviors to be created, eliminated, or changed if you are insightful in the least. The best way is to be inquisitive. Ask yourself good, solid diagnostic questions: What am I observing in this follower that needs to be stopped? What behaviors are missing from their performance? What are they doing that doesn’t need to be stopped but needs to be changed?
Behavior-related goals make it easy to observe progress. The next chapters will deal with how to acknowledge that progress in a way that encourages your followers to keep meeting their goals.
Here are four suggested steps to help you and your followers set goals:
1. Be perfectly clear about your desired results.
2. Determine the behaviors that need to be created, eliminated, or changed to achieve those results.
3. Set specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and timed goals to enact those behaviors. Encourage your followers to do the same.
4. Train and teach your followers to constantly work toward their goals.
